Voortbouwend op het eerdere onderzoek Behind the Curtains of Animation (2022–2024) onderzoekt dit project de performatieve en belichaamde dimensies van animatie binnen Iraanse kunstvormen, met name Pardeh Khani (dramatische vertelkunst) en Zurkhaneh (traditionele gymnastiek). Deze tradities functioneren als levende epistemologieën – systemen waarin kennis niet alleen wordt uitgesproken of geschreven, maar ook belichaamd, uitgevoerd en gerealiseerd door middel van zintuiglijke, kinetische en collectieve praktijken. Hun betekenis overstijgt de historische of esthetische waarde; ze dagen het dominante westerse paradigma uit door te stellen dat kennis niet alleen wordt verworven, maar ook wordt ervaren – een ingewikkelde wisselwerking tussen lichaam, omgeving en gemeenschap.

Vanuit een transdisciplinair kader onderzoekt deze studie de volgende centrale vragen: in hoeverre dragen traditionele Iraanse kunsten bij aan een meer inclusief begrip van animatie, en hoe kan animatie dienen als een performatief pedagogisch instrument dat belichaamd leren bevordert? Door animatiestudies te integreren met performance-theorie en Iraanse culturele praktijken, positioneert het onderzoek het lichaam als een essentieel medium voor kennisoverdracht, dat een brug slaat tussen individuele en collectieve epistemologieën. Verder onderzoekt het hoe tactiele, zintuiglijke en belichaamde praktijken voorouderlijke kennis, cultureel geheugen en gemeenschapsleren activeren, met name binnen niet-westerse contexten.

Dit project maakt gebruik van methodologieën zoals auto-etnografie, kritische observatie, participatieve workshops en artistieke creatie om animatie te herkaderen als zowel een epistemisch als een belichaamd proces. Het biedt innovatieve onderwijsmodellen die wereldwijde culturele uitdagingen zoals behoud, gelijkheid en inclusie aandaan, terwijl het pleit voor een grotere wetenschappelijke betrokkenheid bij niet-westerse artistieke tradities in animatie, performance en pedagogie.

Building on the previous research Behind the Curtains of Animation (2022–2024), this study examines the performative and embodied dimensions of animation within Iranian art forms, particularly Pardeh Khani (dramatic storytelling) and Zurkhaneh (traditional gymnasium). These traditions function as living epistemologies — systems where knowledge is not just spoken or written but embodied, performed and realized through sensory, kinetic, and collective practices. Their significance transcends historical or aesthetic value; they challenge the dominant Western paradigm by asserting that knowledge is not merely acquired but experienced — an intricate interplay between body, environment, and community.

Adopting a transdisciplinary framework, this study explores these central questions: to what extent do traditional Iranian arts contribute to a more inclusive understanding of animation, and how can animation serve as a performative pedagogical tool fostering embodied learning? By integrating animation studies with performance theory and Iranian cultural practices, the research positions the body as a vital medium for knowledge transmission, bridging individual and collective epistemologies. It further examines how tactile, sensory, and embodied practices activate ancestral knowledge, cultural memory, and community learning, particularly within non-Western contexts.

This study employs methodologies such as autoethnography, critical observation, participatory workshops, and artistic creation to reframe animation as both an epistemic and embodied process. It offers innovative educational models that address global cultural challenges such as preservation, equity, and inclusion while advocating for enhanced scholarly engagement with non-Western artistic traditions in animation, performance, and pedagogy.
