BioValueAI: Digitale innovaties voor een circulaire bio-economie
De Europese biogebaseerde industrie bevindt zich op een scharniermoment en staat voor een dubbele uitdaging: het verbeteren van duurzaamheid en concurrentievermogen in een snel evoluerende wereldmarkt. Ondanks het potentieel is de integratie van digitale technologieën in biogebaseerde processen nog steeds beperkt. BioValueAI wil de sector transformeren door AI en digitale technologieën in te zetten om klimaatneutrale, circulaire waardeketens te bouwen. Het pakt gefragmenteerde data-infrastructuren, lage AI-acceptatie en maatschappelijke acceptatie, en beperkte duurzaamheidscijfers aan door gevalideerde AI-modellen, digital twins en tools voor duurzaamheid-per-ontwerp te leveren voor vijf verschillende maar onderling verbonden gebruikscases in de industrie: Cacao Valorisatie, Biogebaseerde Coatings, Precisie Fermentatie, Hennep Keten Intelligentie en Bioraffinage Grondstof Optimalisatie. BioValueAI combineert technologische uitmuntendheid met sociale innovatie en past een slanke multi-actor benadering toe, waarbij oplossingen worden gecreëerd in samenwerking met de industrie, onderzoekers, beleidsmakers en burgers. Ethische, juridische en sociale aspecten (ELSA) zijn vanaf het begin ingebed. AI-modellen worden ontwikkeld op basis van gegevens uit de echte wereld en ondersteund door een digitale tweelingreferentiearchitectuur. Burgerbetrokkenheid en gedragstesten zorgen voor maatschappelijke acceptatie en vertrouwen. Het consortium brengt expertise samen op het gebied van AI, biotechnologie, duurzaamheid en sociale wetenschappen en maakt gebruik van EU-onderzoeksinfrastructuren zoals IBISBA en Data Spaces. De verwachte resultaten zijn gevalideerde AI-modellen op basis van herbruikbare componenten, geïntegreerde duurzaamheidstools en een Business Model Playbook. Innovaties zullen de grondstoffenefficiëntie, opbrengst, afvalvalorisatie en biologische afbreekbaarheid verbeteren. Een verantwoorde AI-richtlijn en een Europese Bio-AI Acceptatie Atlas zullen de afstemming van het beleid en het vertrouwen van het publiek ondersteunen. De impact van BioValueAI omvat navolging in aangrenzende sectoren, afstemming op EU-beleid en internationale samenwerking. Het stelt belanghebbenden in staat om gegevens om te zetten in inzicht, afval in waarde en innovatie in impact.
BioValueAI: Digital Innovations for Circulair Bioeconomy
The European bio-based industry is at a pivotal juncture, facing the dual challenge of improving sustainability and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global market. Despite its potential, integration of digital technologies in bio-based processes is still limited. BioValueAI aims to transform the sector by harnessing AI and digital technologies to build climate-neutral, circular value chains. It addresses fragmented data infrastructures, low AI uptake and societal acceptance, and limited sustainability metrics by delivering validated AI models, digital twins, and sustainability-by-design tools across five diverse yet interconnected industry use cases: Cacao Valorisation, Bio-Based Coatings, Precision Fermentation, Hemp Chain Intelligence, and Biorefinery Feedstock Optimization. Combining technological excellence with social innovation, BioValueAI applies a lean multi-actor approach, co-creating solutions with industry, researchers, policymakers, and citizens. Ethical, legal, and social aspects (ELSA) are embedded from the start. AI models are developed using real-world data and supported by a digital twin reference architecture. Citizen engagement and behavioural testing ensure societal acceptance and trust. The consortium brings together expertise in AI, biotechnology, sustainability, and social sciences, leveraging EU Research Infrastructures like IBISBA and Data Spaces. Expected results include validated AI models based on reusable components, integrated sustainability tools, and a Business Model Playbook. Innovations will improve resource efficiency, yield, waste valorisation, and biodegradability. A responsible AI guideline and European Bio-AI Acceptance Atlas will support policy alignment and public trust. BioValueAI’s impact includes replication in adjacent sectors, alignment with EU policy, and international cooperation. It empowers stakeholders to turn data into insight, waste into value, and innovation into impact.
