KOMBI (Krachtige Ontmoetingen Maken Betere Initiatieven) is een tweejarig partnerschap tussen Kubat’s vzw, Politie Gent, Stad Gent en eCO-CITY, met Arteveldehogeschool in de stuurgroep. Het project wil het vertrouwen en de dialoog tussen burgers—vooral jongeren—en de politie in Ledeberg, Nieuw Gent en Dampoort versterken.

Tussen september 2024 en juni 2025 vonden een 30-tal activiteiten plaats: sportinitiatieven (boksen, worstelen, basketbal, voetbal), informele ontmoetingen (soepmomenten, winterontbijt, samen koken) en educatieve workshops (vuurwerkveiligheid, communicatie, zelfverdediging). De activiteiten vonden plaats op toegankelijke locaties zoals jeugdhuizen, buurthuizen, sportzalen en pleinen, variërend van kleine groepssessies tot grootschalige bijeenkomsten.

De samenwerking met organisaties zoals VZW Jong, De Serre, Ghent Basketball e.a., én de terugkoppeling naar de wijkregisseurs, versterkte het lokale draagvlak. Bij meer dan 60% van de activiteiten waren ook agenten aanwezig, wat als bijzonder positief werd ervaren.

Veranderende percepties en duurzame impact

Gesprekken met jongeren tonen een duidelijke verschuiving: van terughoudendheid naar nieuwsgierigheid en wederzijds respect. De politie wordt minder als louter controle-instantie gezien en meer als menselijk en benaderbaar. Jongeren voelen zich gehoord; agenten merken meer zichtbaarheid en aanspreekbaarheid op straat.

Documentaire-reeks PolarProf

In het najaar van 2024 ging het Hannah Arendt Instituut (HAI) in zee met het KOMBI-project voor de driedelige documentaire PolarProf. De documentaires tonen hoe laagdrempelige sport, wijknetwerken en langdurige samenwerking vertrouwen in instituties—zoals de politie—herstellen. De reeks past binnen het HAI-thema rond anti-polarisering en democratische versterking; KOMBI draagt hieraan bij door inwoners, jongeren, politie en partners te verbinden rond gedeelde actie en dialoog.

EDUBOX ‘Jongeren in dialoog over politie en samenleving’

Binnen KOMBI ontwikkelde Jana Van den Berghe (lerarenopleiding secundair onderwijs Frans & Engels, HOGENT) een Edubox voor het secundair onderwijs. Deze Edubox stimuleert jongeren om op interactieve wijze na te denken over politie, gezag, sociale media en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. De box bevat o.a. een methodiek rond zelfbeeld en autoriteit, een stellingenspel en een reflectie op sociale media en beeldvorming. Nicolas De Baere van Bureau Aanspreekpunt Scholen, Politie Gent gaf inhoudelijke feedback, wat de brug tussen jongerenervaringen en educatieve doelstellingen versterkte.

Transities en vooruitblik

Tijdens het traject vonden enkele belangrijke evoluties plaats. Zo werd het bemiddelingsteam binnen de Gentse politie uitgebreid, startte een samenwerking met Gent Basket, en werd een voorstel geformuleerd om KOMBI op te nemen in de opleidingstrajecten van nieuwe agenten.

In het najaar van 2025 staan opnieuw diverse activiteiten gepland. Zo willen we inzetten op VR-interventiesessies waarbij jongeren en politieteams in dialoog gaan, en focussen we op moeilijker bereikbare doelgroepen, zoals jongens uit Nieuw Gent.

Tijdens de viering van 10 jaar Kubat’s vzw sluiten we het project KOMBI feestelijk af. De resultaten worden gebundeld in een eindrapport dat de basis kan vormen voor vervolgonderzoek naar ‘safe to brave spaces’, in samenwerking met Arteveldehogeschool en HOGENT.

The project aims to strengthen trust and dialogue between citizens—especially young people—and the police in Ledeberg, New Ghent, and Dampoort.

Between September 2024 and June 2025, around 30 activities took place: sports initiatives (boxing, wrestling, basketball, football), informal encounters (soup gatherings, a winter breakfast, cooking together), and educational workshops (firework safety, communication, self-defense). Activities were held at accessible venues such as youth centers, community hubs, sports halls, and public squares, ranging from small group sessions to large-scale events.

Collaboration with organizations like VZW Jong, De Serre, Ghent Basketball, and others—combined with feedback loops to neighborhood coordinators—bolstered local support. Police officers were present at over 60% of the activities, which was experienced as particularly positive.

Changing perceptions and lasting impact

Conversations with young people show a clear shift: from reticence to curiosity and mutual respect. The police are seen less as a purely controlling force and more as human and approachable. Young people feel heard; officers report greater visibility and approachability on the street.

PolarProf documentary series

In autumn 2024, the Hannah Arendt Institute (HAI) partnered with the KOMBI project on the three-part documentary series PolarProf. The films show how low-threshold sports, neighborhood networks, and long-term collaboration help rebuild trust in institutions—such as the police. The series fits within HAI’s theme of anti-polarization and strengthening democracy; KOMBI contributes by connecting residents, young people, police, and partners around shared action and dialogue.

EDUBOX “Young people in dialogue about police and society”

Within KOMBI, Jana Van den Berghe (teacher training, secondary education French & English, HOGENT) developed an Edubox for secondary schools. This Edubox encourages students to think interactively about the police, authority, social media, and civic engagement. It includes, among other things, a methodology on self-image and authority, a statement game, and a reflection on social media and representation. Nicolas De Baere from the School Liaison Office, Ghent Police, provided substantive feedback, strengthening the bridge between youths’ experiences and educational goals.

Transitions and outlook

Several important developments took place during the project. The mediation team within the Ghent Police was expanded, a collaboration with Ghent Basketball was launched, and a proposal was formulated to include KOMBI in the training pathways of new officers.

A new set of activities is planned for autumn 2025. We aim to invest in VR intervention sessions where young people and police teams engage in dialogue, and we will focus on harder-to-reach groups, such as boys from New Ghent.

At the celebration of 10 years of Kubat’s vzw, we will mark the festive conclusion of the KOMBI project. The results will be compiled in a final report that can serve as a basis for follow-up research on “safe to brave spaces,” in collaboration with Artevelde University of Applied Sciences and HOGENT.
