Despite significant progress in prevention and treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa over the past decade, visibly less effort has been made to address the long-term support needs of young people living with HIV/AIDS. These result from growing up with this chronic condition under normative pressure and the indirect consequences in several life domains, including education.
The present multidisciplinary research project (remedial education, teacher education, occupational therapy, social work and social health science) in partnership with Mountains of the Moon University (Uganda), adopts a community-based approach to explore and address challenges in living with HIV/AIDS in school communities. In doing so, this project aims to build a sustainable international and multidisciplinary partnership in which researchers, students and professionals work together to develop comprehensive school communities that can adequately support students in vulnerable situations. To this end, it also develops an interdisciplinary theoretical framework and research training, with a view to strengthening capacities of academic and practitioner institutions to work in a multidisciplinary and community-oriented way. Moreover, this lays the foundation for participatory action research with young people and various stakeholders, including community members, school staff and health workers.
Based on sharpened understanding of support needs and potential in these communities, the team of researchers and participants develops and implements an innovative and context-sensitive intervention. Close collaboration between the disciplines represented in both the research team and the sample results in an extensive and comprehensive approach. The multidisciplinary methodology, knowledge and intervention built around this specific case aims to deliver sustainable results that are transferable to similar challenges worldwide. Consequently, the project results are valorised and disseminated towards (school) communities in Uganda, Flanders and worldwide.
