Documenting Objects is een onderzoeksproject dat zich richt op het functioneren van 'het document' en 'de documentaire' en de manier waarop deze worden gedefinieerd door de spanning tussen principes van nabijheid en afstand. Het is een onderzoek naar de documentaire benadering. Documenting Objects telt 5 casussen: 

1. Towards Civil Dusk is een experimentele documentaire film over amateursterrenkundige waarnemingen. Amateursterrenkunde is een wereld vol tegenstellingen. Het is zowel hoogtechnologisch als doe-het-zelf. Het combineert geavanceerde wetenschappelijke kennis met een directe, romantische waardering van hemellichamen. Het is een eenzame bezigheid die niettemin aanleiding geeft tot grote gemeenschappen van gelijkgestemde zielen. 

2. The Situation As It Is is een fotoroman gebaseerd op het fotoarchief van een architect. Het vertelt het verhaal van de gebeurtenissen die leidden tot een verontrustend staatsdecreet en de nasleep ervan. Ergens in het begin van de jaren negentig, van de ene dag op de andere, verklaarde het decreet dat het bebouwde landschap behouden moest blijven. Het verbood nieuwbouw. ‘De situatie zoals ze is, zal de situatie zijn zoals ze is.’ De gevolgen, zowel voor het landschap als voor het leven van de betrokkenen, zouden verstrekkend zijn. 

3. Amidst the fire, I am not burnt is een documentaire benadering van het iconische landschap dat door de Vesuvius is gevormd. Het onderzoekt de verschillende tijdslagen, wetenschappelijke en populaire benaderingen, historische en hedendaagse fotografische representaties en verhalen die in dit cyclische landschap zijn vastgelegd. Amidst the fire, I am not burnt verweeft documentaire literatuur en fotografie in een constellatie van onderwerpen. Terwijl elke uitbarsting een laag toevoegt aan de vorige, voelt, bewaart, vernietigt, vormt en deelt de Vesuvius informatie. 

4. Capital Compression verkent het poëtisch potentieel van blockchaintechnologie – fotografisch en discursief. De publicatie gebruikt en test strategieën van authenticatie en documentatie. Een gehasht gedicht in negentien regels, een serie van twintig foto's en een essay lopen in elkaar over en eigenen zich aspecten van blockchain toe: de werking, aantrekkingskracht en semiotiek erachter. 

5. the-documents.org is een online platform dat allerlei soorten documenten verzamelt, beschrijft, presenteert en genereert. Het documenteert documenten.

Documenting Objects is a research project that deals with the functioning of ‘the document’ and ‘the documentary’ and the way they are defined by the tension between the ideas of proximity and distance. It investigates and tests documentary as an approximation.

Documeting Objects gathers 5 cases:

1. Towards Civil Dusk is an experimental documentary film on the topic of amateur astronomical observations. Amateur astronomy is a world of stark contradictions. It’s both highly technological and very DIY. It combines advanced scientific knowledge with a direct, romantic appreciation of celestial bodies. It’s a solitary endeavor that nevertheless gives rise to large communities of like-minded souls.
    
2. The Situation As It Is is a photonovel based on an architect’s photographic archive. It tells the story of the events leading up to an unsettling state decree and its aftermath. Sometime in the early 1990s, from one day to the next, the decree declared that the built landscape had to be preserved. It prohibited any new construction. ‘The situation as it is, will be the situation as it is.’ The effects, both on the landscape as on the lives of those involved, would be far-reaching.
3. Amidst the fire, I am not burnt is a documentary approach of the iconic landscape shaped by Vesuvius. It researches the different temporalities, scientific and popular approaches, historic and present-day photographic representations, and stories inscribed in this cyclical landscape. Amidst the fire, I am not burnt interweaves documentary writing and photography in a constellation of subjects. As each eruption adds a layer on top of the last, Vesuvius senses, stores, destroys, shapes and transmits information.
4. Capital Compression explores the poetics of blockchain technology – photographically and discursively. The publication employs and tests strategies of authentication and documentation. A hashed poem in nineteen lines, a series of twenty photographs, and an essay intertwine. Each appropriates aspects of blockchain: its functioning, appeal and semiotics.
