EcoVlinder optimises the cultivation of annual legumes in intercropping with a cereal crop, combined with the undersowing of a complex grass-herb mixture, to achieve the following overall objective: accelerating the transition to more sustainable, climate-resilient and ecosystem-friendly agricultural systems. The project addresses a specific challenge faced by Flemish farmers: the current low and risky uptake of legumes, caused by yield uncertainty, gaps in knowledge regarding profitability, and a lack of clarity about optimal cultivation, harvesting and storage techniques for both crop components. This crop combination offers potential for more stable and efficient roughage production, greater protein self-sufficiency and a strengthening of various ecosystem services. It thus delivers tangible benefits for both the farmer and the wider agro-ecosystem.
