Dit project kijkt door een feministische lens om de systemen/structuren bloot te leggen die het leven van vrouwen vormgeven (klasse, economie, onderwijs, patriarchaat, heteronormativiteit, familie, racisme, cultuur, religie, etc.) met de intentie om te transformeren en opnieuw op te bouwen. Parallel daaraan wil het kunstwerken van vrouwen vieren die uitingen van opstand en verdediging laten zien door middel van reflectie en creatie, waarbij beperkende banden worden verwerkt door jezelf binnenstebuiten te keren.
 

Ik kijk tegelijkertijd naar het schrijven van memoires, dagboeken en brieven en naar experimentele vormen van filmmaken die het persoonlijke, sociaal-politieke en economische, en de alledaagse en unieke gebeurtenissen waaruit ons leven bestaat met elkaar verweven, en zal zo ingaan op hoe de dichotomie tussen het persoonlijke en het private correspondeert met de opposities huis/publieke sfeer en vrouw/man, waardoor ongelijke machtsstructuren in stand worden gehouden en kunst die voortkomt uit de doorleefde ervaringen van vrouwen wordt ondergewaardeerd.
 

Met de blik gericht op een vruchtbare, feministische toekomst, geloof ik vurig dat we moeten leren van het verleden, van onszelf en van degenen die 'het pad hebben geëffend', zoals Sara Ahmed het formuleert in haar boek Living a Feminist Life (2017). Vertrekkend van 'thuis', reizend op feministische paden en onderweg structuren ontmantelend, zal dit onderzoek de basis vormen voor het kunstenaarsteksten en film.

Through a feminist lens, Homeward Bound—Her Memoir on Binds and Becoming aims to out the systems/structures that shape women’s lives (class, economy, education, patriarchy, heteronormativity, family, racism, culture, religion, etc.) with the intent to transform and build anew, in parallel to celebrating works of art by women that show manifestations of revolt and defence through reflection and creation, processing the binds that constrain oneself by turning the inside out.

Looking simultaneously at writing as the memoir, diary and epistolary forms and experimental forms of filmmaking that interweave the personal, socio-political and economic, and the everyday and unique occurrences that our lives are composed of, I will address how the dichotomy between the personal/private corresponds with the binaries of home/public-sphere and female/male, thus sustaining unequal power structures and resulting in the undervaluation of art stemming from lived experiences of women.

Imagining a fertile, feminist future, I fervently believe that one must learn from the past, one’s own, and those who’ve ‘paved the way’, as Sara Ahmed put it in her book Living a Feminist Life (2017). Departing from ‘home’ while travelling on feminist paths, dismantling structures along the way, this research will form the basis of artists’ writing and film.
