Kennisopbouw en vergroting van het areaal peulvruchten in gediversifieerde teeltsystemen door kwantificering van ecosysteemdiensten
Het areaal peulvruchten is nog steeds vrij beperkt in Europa. Peulvruchten spelen echter een belangrijke rol in de eiwitverschuiving naar meer lokaal geproduceerde plantaardige eiwitten. Het LEGENDARY project wil de teelt van peulvruchten in Europa stimuleren door instrumenten en methoden te ontwikkelen om de voordelen van peulvruchten voor het milieu en de samenleving te meten (ecosysteemdiensten). Zowel meerjarige als eenjarige peulgewassen in verschillende landbouwgebieden worden bestudeerd. Het project richt zich niet alleen op de tastbare voordelen zoals voedselproductie, maar ook op minder tastbare ecosysteemdiensten die geleverd worden door de teelt van deze gewassen. Deze tools en methodes zullen boeren en adviseurs helpen om de voordelen van de teelt van peulvruchten beter te begrijpen, waaronder verbeterde bemesting, ongediertebestrijding en gewasdiversificatie. Daarnaast creëren ze een gebruiksvriendelijk systeem om boeren te helpen de juiste peulvruchtensoorten en landbouwmethoden te kiezen voor hun specifieke behoeften.

The acreage of pulses is still quite limited in Europe. However, legumes play an important role in the protein shift towards more locally produced plant proteins. The LEGENDARY project aims to boost the cultivation of legumes in Europe by developing advanced tools and methods to measure the benefits they provide to the environment and society (Ecosystem Services). Both perennial and annual legumes in various farming regions will be studied. The project will focus on assessing not just the tangible benefits like food production, but also less tangible ones like how legumes help regulate the environment and enhance cultural and social aspects such as recreation and aesthetics. These tools and methods will help farmers and advisors better understand the advantages of growing legumes, including improved fertilization, pest control, and crop diversification. Additionally, they will create a user-friendly system to help farmers choose the right legume species and farming methods for their specific needs.
