The agricultural landscape in Flanders has many functions and users that are not easily reconciled. The landscape suffers due to climate change, invasive species, urbanisation, eutrophication and structural desiccation. However, a cooperation between nature and agriculture might result in an augmented level of biodiversity and increase the resilience against climate change.
In order to convince farmers to invest more in nature and climate and to encourage them to improve biodiversity, landscape structure, and soil and water quality, the Flemish Agricultural Investment Fund provides support for non-productive investments (NPIs). However, this support programme is still underutilised and not widely known.
This project aims to inform Flemish farmers and horticulturalists on new sustainable practices and techniques to promote biodiversity, habitat protection, erosion protection, improved water management, landscape development and landscape integration of farm buildings. By means of demonstrations, visits to inspiring examples on farms and experimental sites spread across East Flanders, we want to encourage farmers to invest in the agricultural landscape by realising NPIs.
