Uit verschillende studies blijkt dat incontinentie bij personen met dementie een grote rol speelt in het beslissingsproces om de overstap van het thuis wonen naar residentiële zorg te maken. Voor mantelzorgers is het niet evident om intieme zorg / incontinentie-zorg te verlenen. Zij botsen op verschillende drempels zoals schroom, gebrek aan ondersteuning en informatie op maat rond hoe om te aan met incontinentie, enz.. 
In dit onderzoek wordt bestaande kennis rond incontinentie bij dementie samenbracht met de ervaringen van personen met dementie, mantelzorgers en verpleegkundigen. Binnen het project wordt onderzocht hoe mantelzorgers en personen met dementie optimaal kunnen worden ondersteund op gebied van kennis, vaardigheden en emoties rond (in)continentiezorg. We ontwikkelen gevalideerde cases aan de hand van interviews en focusgroepen. Deze omvatten diverse situaties, met variatie in het profiel van de mantelzorger, mantelzorgnetwerk, professioneel netwerk en fase waarin de persoon met dementie zich bevindt. Aan deze casussen is een onderbouwd advies verbonden op maat van mantelzorgers, met overzicht van ondersteuningsbronnen, tips enz.. Dit materiaal kan ook ingezet worden als studiemateriaal voor studenten en zorgverstrekkers, leidraad voor praatcafés, en sensibiliseringsmateriaal voor mantelzorgers die nog niet met incontinentie van hun naaste geconfronteerd werden.

Various studies have shown that incontinence in persons with dementia plays a significant role in the decision-making process of transitioning from living at home to residential care. For informal caregivers, it is not obvious to provide intimate care, such as incontinence care. They encounter various barriers such as hesitation, lack of support and a shortage of customized information on how to deal with incontinence. 
This research brings together existing knowledge on incontinence in dementia with the experiences of persons with dementia, informal caregivers and nurses. The project explores how informal caregivers and persons with dementia can be optimally supported in the areas of knowledge, skills and emotions related to (in)continence care. We develop validated cases based on interviews and focus groups which encompass various situations, with variation in the informal caregiver’s profile, informal care network, professional network and the stage of dementia of the person being cared for. Each of this cases is accompanied by well-founded advice tailored to informal caregivers, providing an overview of support sources, tips, etc. This material can also be used as study material for students and healthcare providers, a guideline for discussion groups, and as awareness-raising material for informal caregivers who have not yet faced with incontinence issues in the person they care for.
