kennis.

NARRATIVE THREADS: Co-authoring strategic change with manufacturing SMEs through cluster-mediated SSH-industry knowledge exchange

Upskilling programmes for manufacturing SMEs assume workers who resist strategic change lack technical competence. Often the
friction sits elsewhere: in the narratives linking worker expertise, management decisions, customer-needs interpretation and market
pathways to the new direction. NARRATIVE THREADS addresses this narrative friction in manufacturing SMEs, startups and spinoffs
using SSH knowledge including the Arts.
Sector clusters in advanced textiles (Tèxtils.CAT, ES), production technologies (PRODUTECH, PT) and space technologies (Corallia, EL)
deliver SSH engagement through their existing member networks. A four-pattern diagnostic typology (Identity Displacement,
Continuity Rupture, Governance Destabilisation, Future Anxiety) names the specific friction forms that SSH can read and company
managers can act on. Four SSH research groups supply the underlying framework: Storylistening (Cambridge), socio-technical
analysis (RWTH Aachen), organisational narrative (HoGent) and arts-based adult learning (CIAPE). International researcher-student
teams apply it through cluster-hosted hackathons, mentorship and exchange placements, building first-hand understanding of
industry realities; social, economic and cultural inequality considerations run through every stage.
Over 30 months the action engages 12 to 16 SMEs across three sectors and three Member States. A six-stage process (Prepare, Listen,
Co-Design, Develop, Embed, Consolidate) applies the diagnostic to live company challenges. A parallel study tests the technical and
conceptual feasibility of SSH-industry knowledge exchange for innovation management, organisational development, sustainability
and long-term profitability.
Outputs: methodology toolkit, replication academy reaching 20+ clusters from 10+ countries, three service-integration plans, two
peer-reviewed articles and a policy brief. The action contributes to the Competitiveness Compass strand on the valorisation of
knowledge.
