Terwijl een preminiem van Eendracht De Haan zich positioneert voor het nemen van een vrije trap, meet een TELERAD-sensor van het Federaal Agentschap voor Nucleaire Controle een stralingsniveau van 0,10 µSv/h. Op de achtergrond loopt de Nieuwe Steenweg. Er staan wagens geparkeerd voor een alleenstaand huis met een witte poort. De zwarte elzen en hazelaars op de voorgrond zijn pas gesnoeid. 

De handleiding valt open op pagina 17 en 18. Er is geen tekst, enkel fotografisch beeld. In een flits wordt duidelijk wat waar hoort, in welke volgorde dat moet gebeuren en met welke hand. 

Op de R40 staat er een file in de richting van de Dampoort. Een vrachtwagenchauffeur kijkt naar een draaiend reclamepaneel op het dak van een voormalige lasfabriek. De drie beelden en boodschappen ziet hij intussen voor de vierde keer. Ze lijken op een vreemde manier iets met elkaar te maken te hebben, en ze lijken niks te willen verkopen. Zijn betonmixer is leeg. Hij stortte net negen kubieke meter beton in de fundering van de Verapaz-brug. 

On Instructing Photography graaft naar de productieve wisselwerking tussen fotografie en procedures. Procedures kunnen daarbij instructies of restricties zijn, of beide. Het onderzoek focust op procedures als artistiek principe en laat die los op het landschap, dat als een inhoudelijke lijn door het onderzoeksproject loopt. 

On Instructing Photography is een practice-based en kritisch onderzoek. Het telt drie casussen:
 

1. In TELERAD wordt onderzocht hoe documentaire landschapsfotografie opereert onder stringente instructies en restricties. We voeren onderzoek rond iets wat onzichtbaar, grenzeloos en vooral hypothetisch is in een landschap: radioactieve straling. De TELERAD-infrastructuur is een netwerk van meer dan 250 meetstations verspreid over het Belgische grondgebied. Dat netwerk biedt een ongebruikelijke dwarsdoorsnede van het fysieke, hedendaagse Belgische landschap.

2. In LANDSCAPING, A PERFECT MANUAL onderzoeken we hoe fotografie zelf instrumenteel en instruerend kan zijn. Instruerende fotografie hoort hyperfunctioneel en ondubbelzinnig te zijn. Het gaat daarbij niet om beeldende of conceptuele uitmuntendheid, maar om een instrumenteel karakter van het beeld. Deze casus reveleert de spanning tussen het speelse en het serieuze, en tussen een heldere constraint en het onvoorspelbare resultaat van het toepassen daarvan.

3. In FEUILLETON verkennen we hoe een strikt protocol kan leiden tot onverwachte resultaten, samenwerkingen en inzichten binnen fotografie-onderwijs. We werken vanuit een locatiespecifieke context en behandelen de spanning tussen fotografie en publieke ruimte. De studenten creëren een beeldverhaal voor een billboard en baseren zich daarbij op strikte procedures. 

On Instructing Photography zit op het snijvlak van documentaire fotografie, essay en literatuurwetenschap. Het onderzoeksproject gaat een intensieve samenwerking aan met studenten.

The manual opens on pages 17 and 18. There is no text, only photographic images. In a flash, it becomes clear what belongs where, in what order it should be done and what hand to use.

There is a traffic jam on the R40 towards the Dampoort. A truck driver looks at a rotating advertising panel on the roof of a former welding factory. He is seeing the three images and messages for the fourth time. They seem to have something to do with each other in a strange way, and they don't seem to want to sell anything at all. His concrete mixer is empty. He just poured nine cubic metres of concrete into the foundation of the Verapaz bridge.

On Instructing Photography delves into the productive interplay between photography and procedures (instructions, constraints, or both). The research focuses on procedures as an artistic principle and explores them in the context of landscape: a recurring theme in On Instructing Photography.

On Instructing Photography is a practice-based and critical research project. It gathers three case studies:

1. TELERAD explores how documentary landscape photography operates under stringent instructions and restrictions. We conduct research into something invisible, boundless and above all hypothetical in a landscape: radioactive radiation. TELERAD is a network of more than 250 monitoring stations spread across the Belgian territory. That network offers an unusual cross-section of the physical, contemporary Belgian landscape.

2. In LANDSCAPING, A PERFECT MANUAL, we explore how photography itself can be instrumental and instructional. Instructional photography is supposed to be hyper-functional and unambiguous. It is not about visual or conceptual excellence, but about an instrumental nature of the image. This case reveals the tension between the playful and the serious, and between a clear constraint and the unpredictable result of its application.

3. In FEUILLETON, we explore how strict procedures can lead to unexpected results, collaborations and insights within photography education. Working from a site-specific context, we address the tension between photography and public space. Students create a visual story for a billboard, relying on strict procedures.

On Instructing Photography places itself at the intersection of documentary photography, essay and literary studies. The research project engages in an intensive collaboration with students.
