Het onderzoek richt zich op twee hoofdpunten. Ten eerste zal er een follow-up studie plaatsvinden van voorgaand onderzoek naar de afbouw van antipsychotica bij volwassenen met een verstandelijke beperking, evenals een duplicatie ervan met een grotere steekproef, om de relatie tussen psychofarmacagebruik en Quality of Life verder te onderzoeken. Ten tweede zal er gewerkt worden aan de ontwikkeling van een psychofarmacabeleid voor voorzieningen die personen met een verstandelijke beperking en probleemgedrag ondersteunen. Het onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd door middel van een mixed methods-design (multi-case study met n=±100) om de impact van het afbouwen van off-label antipsychotica op QoL uitgebreid te beschrijven. Daarnaast wordt het onderzoek gekoppeld aan een exploratieve literatuurstudie van relevante internationale kaders, waarbij het Quality of Life-model van Schalock als uitgangspunt wordt genomen om de basis te vormen voor een beleidsmodel. Dit beleidsmodel zal specifiek gericht zijn op psychofarmacabeleid in de zorgvoorzieningen, waarbij multidisciplinaire samenwerking centraal staat. Tot slot zullen de resultaten van dit onderzoek, in lijn met de principes van implementation research (Theobald et al., 2018), leiden tot een holistisch en breed toepasbaar beleidskader voor het gebruik van psychofarmaca en de ondersteuning van personen met een verstandelijke beperking en probleemgedrag, met als uitgangspunt het bevorderen van QoL.

The study will focus on two main points. First, there will be a follow-up study of previous research on antipsychotic drug withdrawal in adults with intellectual disabilities, as well as its duplication with a larger sample, to further investigate the relationship between psychopharmacia use and Quality of Life. Secondly, work will be done to develop a psychopharmacology policy for facilities supporting persons with intellectual disabilities and problem behaviour. The study will be conducted through a mixed methods design (multi-case study with n=±100) to comprehensively describe the impact of tapering off-label antipsychotics on QoL. In addition, the study will be linked to an exploratory literature review of relevant international frameworks, using Schalock's Quality of Life model as a starting point to form the basis for a policy model. This policy model will specifically focus on psychopharmacy policy in healthcare facilities, with multidisciplinary collaboration at its core. Finally, in line with the principles of implementation research (Theobald et al., 2018), the results of this study will lead to a holistic and broadly applicable policy framework for the use of psychopharmaceuticals and the support of persons with intellectual disabilities and problem behaviour, with the starting point of promoting QoL.
