'Simple as ABC' is een praktijkgericht artistiek onderzoeksproject naar het grensregime van de EU, naar grensdenken en de grensblik dat start vanuit een onderzoek naar de constructie van mijn eigen internationale paspoortprivileges als Belg en burger van de Europese Unie. Door het migratie- en grensbeleid van de EU te kadreren als onderdeel van een 'internationaal im/mobiliteitsmanagementapparaat' dat gebruik maakt van "het vermogen om de gebaren, gedragingen, meningen of discoursen van levende wezens vast te leggen, te oriënteren, te bepalen, te onderscheppen, te modelleren, te controleren of te beveiligen" (Agamben), zoom ik in op hoe dit apparaat via complexe processen fundamenteel mobiliteitsgeweld produceert, waarbij het de internationale verplaatsing van sommige mensen vergemakkelijkt en tegelijkertijd de verplaatsing van vele anderen illegaal maakt. De verschillende werken uit de 'Simple as ABC'-serie zijn pluriforme pogingen om zelfkritische artistieke strategieën te ontwikkelen om "documentair bestuur te contra-documenteren" (Taschereau Mamers) en het apparaat waarin ik zelf zo diep ingebed ben te 'ontheiligen'. 

Ik analyseer dit streven naar tegendocumentatie door middel van de kaders van 'speculatieve documentaire' en 'speculatieve museologie'. Net als vroege documentaires ontstonden Europese staatsmusea als onderdeel van een historisch apparaat van imperiale controle dat geënt was op wat kunstenaar en theoreticus op het gebied van visuele cultuur Ariella Aïsha Azoulay beschrijft als de 'institutionalisering van neutraliteit' - waartoe ook andere machtstechnologieën behoren, zoals taxidermie, antropologie, biologie, archeologie en archiefpraktijken. 

Met 'Simple as ABC' probeer ik uit te zoeken welke documentaire en museale gebaren ik me kan toe-eigenen voor heel andere doeleinden dan die van gezaghebbende documentaires of staatsmusea. Ik hoop dus ruimtes te creëren die – in plaats van beelden te reproduceren – verbeelding voortbrengen, die verhalen stimuleren die nog niet gerealiseerde verledens, hedens en toekomsten belichten. Gedurende het onderzoek hecht ik veel belang aan een dialogische benadering, waarbij ik interviews en/of nauwe samenwerkingen aanga met tientallen EU-functionarissen, grenswachten, mensensmokkelaars en – bovenal – deskundigen die fysiek en psychologisch onderworpen werden aan de buitengrens van de EU die ik als EU-burger dagelijks help opbouwen – deskundigen wier belichaamde kennis maar al te vaak 'actief ongezien' is (Khosravi).

Starting from an investigation into the construction of my own international passport privileges as a Belgian and European Union citizen, 'Simple as ABC' is a practice-based artistic research into the EU’s border regime, into border thinking and the border gaze. Framing EU migration and border policies as part of an ‘international im/mobility management apparatus’ that exercises “the capacity to capture, orient, determine, intercept, model, control, or secure the gestures, behaviors, opinions, or discourses of living beings” (Agamben), I zoom in on how, through complex processes, this apparatus produces basic mobility violence, facilitating the international movement of some people, while at the same time illegalising the movement of many others. The different works from the 'Simple as ABC'-series are multiform attempts to develop self-critical artistic strategies to “counter-document documentary governance” (Taschereau Mamers) and ‘profanate’ this apparatus I myself am so profoundly embedded in. 

I analyse this endeavour to counter-documenting through the frameworks of ‘speculative documentary’ and ‘speculative museology’. Similarly to early documentaries, European state museums emerged as part of a historical apparatus of imperial control that was grafted on what artist and visual culture theorist Ariella Aïsha Azoulay describes as the ‘institutionalization of neutrality’ - which also includes other technologies of power, such as taxidermy, anthropology, biology, archaeology and archival practices. 

With 'Simple as ABC', I'm trying to figure out what documentary and museological gestures I could appropriate for wholly different purposes than those pursued by authoritative documentaries or state-built/state-building museums. Thus, I hope to create spaces that - rather than reproducing images - produce imagination, that foster narratives illuminating yet-to-be-realised pasts, presents and futures. Throughout the research, I attach great importance to a dialogical approach, interviewing and/or collaborating closely with dozens of EU officials, border guards, people smugglers and - above all - experts who have been physically and psychologically subjected to the EU’s external border which I as an EU citizen help to construct on a daily basis - experts whose embodied knowledge is all too often ‘actively unseen’ (Khosravi).
