Schools are increasingly facing social challenges and welfare needs. To tackle the growing problems of deprivation in and around schools, collaborations are emerging between schools, CLBs, welfare organisations and bridging figures. These collaborations are necessary but not self-evident, which is why HOGENT is conducting research into the collaboration between education and the wider welfare field with the aim of supporting families in vulnerable situations.
SKI-Tool: Screening, quality and inspiration tool for welfare and education actors for the roll-out and implementation of an integral cooperation in supporting children in socially vulnerable families at school.
The figures of the latest poverty barometer do not lie, child poverty in Flanders is on the rise. One of the observations in the yearbook on child poverty is the lack of a real child poverty policy and poor cooperation between institutions. People indicate that social workers can strengthen their multi-perspective and, despite the many actions, they regret that social inequality in education is still high.
In the Flemish educational context, various social challenges within the school lead to a transversal and integral approach, increasingly schools open their doors to welfare workers. This creates networks in function of caring for children from socially vulnerable families. Today, such a network is not clear: what types of contacts are there, how many, how intense, and on a regular basis? In addition, the question arises how these actors work with each other to provide quality support to vulnerable families. This research aims to map the existing network of primary schools (network map) and question its quality from the perspective of all actors (including parents).
The output of the project is an inspiration guide in which all research results have been made accessible. Moreover, the inspiration guide can serve as a reflection tool for school and welfare actors to set up collaborations.
