SLIM-BUF emphasizes all aspects of Good Agricultural Practices concerning the use of a buffer strip next to a VHA watercourse/body of water, including the available mechanization for construction and maintenance (weed control, mowing). Two regions in East and West Flanders were selected due to specific challenges with pesticide residues and nitrates in surface water and/or their location in drinking water protection areas. This concrete regional context with tangible examples motivates farmers to participate through the 'teach-the-teacher' principle: a limited number of farmers will be closely involved in the activities in co-creation with the project team. In Living Labs, a broader audience is invited, and the 'teachers' share their experiences. Through data collection focused on the functions provided by a buffer strip and based on results from past projects, SLIM-BUF demonstrates the usefulness of buffer strips and raises awareness around this topic. The project also aims to reach as wide an audience as possible with activities spread throughout Flanders. A machine demonstration day is being organized where all relevant machines (both for installation and maintenance) and innovations in mechanization will be presented. Based on a compilation of experiences and observations from the two focus regions, a choice tool and various informational materials will be developed. This will support farmers in making informed choices and contribute to a sustainable, economically viable agricultural practice.
