Dit onderzoeksproject richt zich op de performativiteit van de materialen die aan de basis liggen van historische en hedendaagse, elektronische en digitale media. Een combinatie van media-archeologie en speculatie wordt toegepast in een poging om ons los te wrikken van de problematische oorsprong van deze materialen en technologieën.

Het onderzoek gaat uit van de werkhypothese dat alle materialen kunstmatig zijn en dat het noemen van materiaal 'ruw' alleen dient om een onderscheid te maken tussen zichtbare en onzichtbare arbeid. Door materiële processen in films en installaties te onderzoeken en te tonen, onderzoek ik de technologieën, sociale structuren, concepten en verhalen rond de agency van de materialen die centraal staan in onze huidige technologieën.

Het doel is om procedures en apparaten te ontwikkelen die beelden produceren, maar die ook een specifieke technologische aanwezigheid ensceneren. Door speculatieve perspectieven en technologieën te ontwikkelen, hoop ik na te denken over de manieren waarop het menselijke, het niet-menselijke en technologie elkaar articuleren.

This research project focuses on the performativity of the materials that underlie historical and contemporary, electronic and digital media. A combination of media archaeology and speculation is used in an attempt to pry ourselves loose from the problematic origins of these materials and technologies.

The research starts from the working assumption that all materials are artificial, and that calling material 'raw' only serves to make a distinction between visible and invisible labour. By exploring and showing material processes in films and installations, I will investigate the technologies, social structures, concepts and narratives around the agency of the materials that are central to our current technologies.

The aim is to develop procedures and devices that produce images, but which also stage a specific technological presence. By developing speculative perspectives and technologies, I hope to reflect on some of the ways in which the human, the non-human and technology articulate each other.
