Behoud door ontwikkeling: nieuwe perspectieven op historische landgoederen in Vlaanderen

Dit onderzoeksproject gaat op zoek naar manieren om historische landgoederen op een duurzame manier in stand te houden. Daarnaast gaat aandacht naar de rol die de landschaps- en tuinarchitect kan spelen in deze revalorisaties en naar de passende beleidscontext die ze kan faciliteren. De nadruk ligt op het creëren van een maatschappelijke meerwaarde op cultuurhistorisch, ecologisch, esthetisch, sociaal of economisch vlak. Het project besteedt aandacht aan hedendaagse invullingen van historische beheertradities van historische landgoederen waaronder houtwinning, voedselvoorziening of wildbeheer. Ook nieuwe gebruiksmogelijkheden komen aan bod zoals natuurbegraafplaatsen, site-specifieke kunstparcours of andere activiteiten die inkomsten voor de instandhouding kunnen genereren.
Een dertigtal ‘best-practices’ van meervoudig ruimtegebruik van historische landgoederen uit binnen- en buitenland worden eerst grondig bestudeerd om een beeld te krijgen van specifieke problematieken en kansen.
Vervolgens worden in een vijftal living labs toekomstscenario’s voor revalorisatie geëxploreerd met behulp van ontwerpend onderzoek en in nauwe interactie met landeigenaars, overheidsinstanties, ontwerpers en andere actoren die relevant zijn voor of betrokken zijn bij de specifieke landgoederen. De ‘living labs’ worden gekoppeld aan ontwerpateliers binnen de opleidingen landschaps- en tuinarchitectuur, landschapsontwikkeling, beeldbouwkunst en autonome vormgeving.
De combinatie van literatuuranalyse met de bevindingen uit de best-practices en de living labs zal aanleiding geven tot concreet implementeerbare voorstellen voor nieuwe gebruiksmogelijkheden, tot beleidsaanbevelingen om dit te faciliteren en tot reflecties over de mogelijkheden voor een verbrede rol van de landschaps- en tuinarchitectuur.

Preservation through development: new perspectives on historic estates in Flanders

This research project looks for ways to maintain historic estates in a sustainable manner. It also looks at the role the landscape and garden architect can play in these revaluations and the appropriate policy context that can facilitate them. The emphasis is on creating social added value on a cultural-historical, ecological, aesthetic, social or economic level. The project pays attention to contemporary interpretations of historic management traditions of historic estates including timber extraction, food supply or wildlife management. It also addresses new uses such as natural burial grounds, site-specific art trails or other activities that can generate income for preservation.
Some thirty best practices of multiple space use of historic estates from the Netherlands and abroad are first studied in depth to get a picture of specific problems and opportunities. Then, in about five living labs, future scenarios for revalorization will be explored using design research and in close interaction with landowners, government agencies, designers and other actors relevant to or involved in the specific estates. The "living labs" will be linked to design workshops within the courses in landscape and garden architecture, landscape development, sculpture and autonomous design.
The combination of literature analysis with the findings from the best-practices and the living labs will give rise to concrete implementable proposals for new uses, to policy recommendations to facilitate this, and to reflections on the possibilities for an expanded role of landscape and garden architecture.
