Discourse On Drugs

Discourse on Drugs is een exploratief onderzoeksproject over de portrettering van drugs, druggebruik en druggebruikers in populaire fictie en hoe dit discours spoort en/of verschilt met het (semi) officiële discours over drugs(gebruik)(ers).

Onderzoek wijst uit dat framing van drugs(gebruik) (mee) bepaalt hoe drugs(gebruik)(ers) gepercipieerd worden door zowel buitenstaanders als betrokkenen zelf (beleid, hulpverleners, gebruikers). De social imaginary rond drugs(gebruik)(ers) wordt gevormd door enerzijds de (semi)officiële discours vanuit de overheid en (para)overheidsinstanties (het drugsbeleid, zorgorganisaties, preventie-organisaties…) en anderzijds de (social) media, fictie (literatuur, series, films, muziek…) en andere artistieke uitingen die bepaalde discours rond drugs(gebruik) in het sociale veld brengen. Er is al heel wat discours-analystisch onderzoek naar deze topics gedaan maar nog niet expliciet naar hoe beide discours zich tot elkaar verhouden.

In dit onderzoeksproject worden drie hypotheses onderzocht: (1) het discours in fictie is een symptoom voor het officiële discours, (2) de discours in fictie kunnen een aanvulling, kritiek of alternatief zijn voor het officiële discours en (3) het fictionele discours rond drugs(gebruik)(ers) kan door een alternatieve framing van drugs(gebruik) kansen bieden om stereotypering en stigmatisering tegen te gaan en dus een horizon te openen voor alternatieve en potentieel emancipatorische sociaal-subjectieve identificaties en positioneringen van betrokkenen.

Er werden drie werkpakketten gedefinieerd:
• kritische analyse van de framing van drugs(gebruik)(ers) in (semi)officiële discours via literatuuronderzoek
• casestudy: een kritische discours-analyse van een internationale fictiereeks waarin drugs(gebruik)(ers) figureren
• conclusie: een kritische discours-analytische vergelijking van populaire/fictionele discours met (semi)-officiële discours rond drugs(gebruik)(ers)

Discourse on Drugs

Discourse on Drugs is an exploratory research project on the portrayal of drugs, drug use and drug users in popular fiction and how this discourse is consistent and/or differs from the (semi) official discourse on drugs (use).

Research shows that framing of drugs (use) (co)determines how drugs (use) (users) are perceived by both outsiders and those involved (policymakers, social workers, users).The social imaginary around drugs(use)(ers) is formed by the (semi)official discourse from the government and (para)government agencies (the drug policy, care organisations, prevention organisations...) on the one hand and the (social) media, fiction (literature, series, films, music...) and other artistic expressions that bring certain discourse around drugs(use) into the social field on the other hand.A lot of discourse-analytical research has already been done on these topics but not yet explicitly on how both discourses relate to each other. This research project explores three hypotheses: (1) the discourse in fiction is a symptom of the official discourse, (2) the discourse in fiction can complement, criticise or alternative the official discourse and (3) the fictional discourse around drug (use)ers can, through an alternative framing of drug (use), offer opportunities to counter stereotyping and stigmatisation and thus open a horizon for alternative and potentially emancipatory social-subjective identifications and positionings of those involved.

Three work packages were defined:

critical analysis of the framing of drug(use)(ers) in (semi)official discourse through literature review
case study: a critical discourse analysis of an international fiction series featuring drugs(use)(ers)
conclusion: a critical discourse-analytical comparison of popular/fictional discourse with (semi)-official discourse on drug(use)(ers)
