Music for social impact: practitioners' contexts work and beliefs

Participatieve muzikale activiteiten worden meer en meer buiten formele onderwijstrajecten en kunstscholen aangeboden aan groepen met sociale noden of tekortkomingen in diverse contexten. Deze Socially Impactful Music Making-activiteiten (SIMM) hebben het tweeledige doel om enerzijds mensen te helpen om artistiek waardevolle muzikale output (uitvoeringen) te genereren en anderzijds hen te helpen om specifieke sociale doelen te bereiken (zoals inclusie, empowerment, community building, activisme of burgerschap). In het algemeen worden voor SIMM-activiteiten professionele muzikanten aangetrokken zoals leraars, trainers of facilitators. Resultaten zijn dus afhankelijk van wat deze praktijkleraars doen, van hun competenties, overtuigingen, motivatie, en van de interne en externe voorwaarden en beperkingen waaronder ze werken.
Dit project maakt een systematische en diepgaande analyse van praktijkleraars die SIMM-activiteiten ondernemen in verschillende landen (Colombia, Benelux, Finland, Verenigd Koninkrijk), en onderzoekt hoe hun achtergronden, training, overtuigingen en contexten de manier waarop ze hun werk uitvoeren beïnvloeden. De volgende elementen komen daarbij aan bod:
• identiteit en achtergrond;
• artistieke en pedagogische praktijken;
• evaluatie en ontwikkeling;
• professionele omgeving;
• organisatorische en pedagogische implicaties.
Het projectteam onderzoekt de drijfveren en spanningen die de praktijkleraars ondervinden en levert daarbij inzichten voor hun training, aanstelling en financiering, en voor de creatieve ontwikkeling van goede praktijken.

Participatory musical activities are increasingly offered outside formal educational pathways and art schools to groups with social needs or deficiencies in various contexts. These Socially Impactful Music Making (SIMM) activities have the dual purpose of helping people generate artistically valuable musical output (performances) on the one hand, and helping them achieve specific social goals (such as inclusion, empowerment, community building, activism or citizenship) on the other. Generally, SIMM activities engage professional musicians such as teachers, trainers or facilitators. Results therefore depend on what these practitioners do, on their competences, beliefs, motivation, and on the internal and external conditions and constraints under which they work.
This project makes a systematic and in-depth analysis of practitioner-teachers undertaking SIMM activities in different countries (Colombia, Benelux, Finland, UK), investigating how their backgrounds, training, beliefs and contexts influence the way they carry out their work. It addresses the following elements:
- identity and background;
- artistic and pedagogical practices;
- evaluation and development;
- professional environment;
- organisational and pedagogical implications.
The project team explores the drivers and tensions experienced by practising teachers, providing insights for their training, tenure and funding, and for the creative development of good practices.
