A more efficient use of nitrogen in wheat

Stricter fertiliser standards in a changing climate are making it increasingly difficult in Flanders to grow wheat profitably with the current approach. Legal constraints together with changing cultivation conditions create the need for adapted and more flexible nitrogen fertilisation.
Currently, nitrogen fertilisation recommendations are developed at plot level by means of an N-index. That index reflects how much mineral nitrogen will become available for a given crop during the growing season. It does not take into account growth- and weather conditions during the growing season. With the changing climate and associated change in growing conditions, it is becoming increasingly difficult to make suitable fertiliser recommendations.
Consequently, to further optimise nitrogen fertilisation, there is a need for a more flexible advisory system that takes into account current growth and weather conditions at any time. Optimisation also requires additional knowledge about the extent to which different biostimulants, fertiliser formulations and varieties can contribute to higher efficiency in nitrogen uptake.
The project targets the more than 8,000 Flemish farmers who grow wheat, but also all parts of the wheat chain involved. This ranges from the seed sector, producers of biostimulants and fertilisers to the sales market such as the milling and baking sectors.
