Opschalen van teelt en verwerking van hennep voor textieltoepassingen in de biobased economy

Dit project wil de Vlaamse landbouw- en textielsector de nodige concrete handvatten en richtlijnen verschaffen om een gerichte hennepteelt en verwerking tot kwalitatieve textielproducten mogelijk te maken op industriële schaal en de verschillende schakels in de keten op elkaar afstemmen.
De herintroductie van hennep als multifunctioneel, ecologisch, duurzaam gewas is wereldwijd in opmars. In Europa is de hennepindustrie sterk gericht op het telen van hennep voor ‘laagwaardige’ korte hennepvezels, maar hennepteelt gericht op het bekomen van lange vezels, verwerkbaar in hoogwaardige textieltoepassingen, zou economisch gezien meer perspectieven kunnen bieden aan de telers. Een kwaliteitsvolle hennepteelt voor textieltoepassingen komt bovendien tegemoet aan de vraag van de Vlaamse textielsector naar natuurlijke vezels afkomstig van lokale, traceerbare en duurzame teelt en verwerking. Het gebrek aan kennis omtrent de opschaalbaarheid van hennepteelt en verwerking tot textielproduct staat de introductie van hennepteelt voor textielvezel in Vlaanderen en Europa echter (nog) in de weg.
Dit project wil de Vlaamse landbouw- en textielsector de nodige concrete handvatten en richtlijnen verschaffen om een gerichte hennepteelt en verwerking tot kwalitatieve textielproducten mogelijk te maken op industriële schaal en de verschillende schakels in de keten op elkaar afstemmen. Op die manier beoogt het project de productie en het gebruik van henneptextieltoepassingen te realiseren als onderdeel van een lokale ‘bio-based economy’. Daarnaast zal ook de eindconsument geïnformeerd worden over de duurzaamheidsaccenten van dit gewas en zijn toepassingen.

Scaling up cultivation and processing of hemp for textile applications in the biobased economy.

This project wants to provide the Flemish agricultural and textile sector with the necessary concrete handles and guidelines to make targeted hemp cultivation and processing into high-quality textile products possible on an industrial scale and aims to coordinate the various links in the chain.
The reintroduction of hemp as a multifunctional, ecologically sustainable crop is gaining momentum worldwide. In Europe, the hemp industry is strongly focused on cultivating hemp for 'low-value' short hemp fibres, but hemp cultivation aimed at obtaining long fibres, which can be processed into high-value textile applications, could offer more economic perspectives to growers. Moreover, high-quality hemp cultivation for textile applications meets the demand of the Flemish textile sector for natural fibres from local, traceable and sustainable cultivation and processing. However, the lack of knowledge about the scalability of hemp cultivation and processing into textile products is (still) hindering the introduction of hemp cultivation for textile fibres in Flanders and Europe.
This project wants to provide the Flemish agricultural and textile sector with the necessary concrete handles and guidelines to make targeted hemp cultivation and processing into high-quality textile products possible on an industrial scale and to harmonise the different links in the chain. In this way, the project aims to realise the production and use of hemp textile applications as part of a local 'bio-based economy'. In addition, the end consumer will be informed about the sustainability aspects of this crop and its applications.
