Communiceren met anderstalige diabetici

Het is een open deur intrappen dat taal en communicatie een cruciale rol spelen bij de realisatie van kwalitatieve zorgverlening. Als er taal- en culturele verschillen bestaan, is de rol van communicatie des te belangrijker en potentieel een groot struikelblok. COM-POWER 2.0 zet in op het versterken van communicatie binnen de diabeteszorg met bijzondere aandacht voor anderstalige patiënten. In een eerder onderzoeksproject, COM-Power (2021-2023), ontwikkelde een multidisciplinair onderzoeksteam verschillende digitale bruginstrumenten die zorgprofessionals kunnen inzetten in hun consultaties met anderstalige patiënten: een e-learning module over zwangerschapsdiabetes; communicatiemateriaal voor anderstalige diabetici gericht op Turkse, Marokkaanse en Indiase patiënten (9 recepten per cultuur met aandacht voor de nutritionele info, telkens voorzien van een audio-opname); cultuursensitieve en meertalige animatievideo’s over zwangerschapsdiabetes (ontwikkeld ism de Diabetes Liga).
In COM-Power 2.0 werken we deze digitale bruginstrumenten (COM-Power 2021-2023) verder af en toetsen we hun efficiëntie af in het werkveld. Tegelijk bevragen we ook het werkveld naar mogelijke thema’s voor een nieuwe e-learning module. Daarnaast valoriseren we onze projectresultaten via mondelinge en schriftelijke bijdragen die we zullen delen met studenten, onderzoekers en zorgprofessionals. Op die manier hopen we een constructieve en cultuursensitieve dialoog te bevorderen tussen zorgvrager, mantelzorger en zorgprofessionals.

Communicating with foreign-speaking diabetics

It is an open door that language and communication play a crucial role in achieving quality care delivery. Where language and cultural differences exist, the role of communication is all the more important and potentially a major stumbling block. COM-POWER 2.0 is committed to strengthening communication within diabetes care with a particular focus on non-native speaking patients. In an earlier research project, COM-Power (2021-2023), a multidisciplinary research team developed several digital bridge tools that healthcare professionals can use in their consultations with non-Dutch-speaking patients: an e-learning module on gestational diabetes; communication material for non-Dutch-speaking diabetics aimed at Turkish, Moroccan and Indian patients (9 recipes per culture with a focus on nutritional information, each with an audio recording); culturally-sensitive and multilingual animated videos on gestational diabetes (developed in collaboration with the Diabetes League).
In COM-Power 2.0 we will further develop these digital bridge instruments (COM-Power 2021-2023) and test their efficiency in the field. At the same time, we are also asking the field for possible themes for a new e-learning module. In addition, we valorize our project results through oral and written contributions that we will share with students, researchers and healthcare professionals. In this way, we hope to promote a constructive and culturally sensitive dialogue between caregiver, informal caregivers and the patient.
