Enhancing the Reproductive Autonomy of Girls in Uganda

Een groot deel van de adolescente meisjes in Afrika bezuiden de Sahara heeft te maken met seksuele en reproductieve gezondheid (SRH). reproductieve gezondheid (SRH), zoals hiv en aids, vroegtijdige huwelijken, tienerzwangerschappen en vroeggeboorte. Dit draagt bij aan een slechte gezondheid en schooluitval, wat een negatieve invloed heeft op de maatschappelijke positie van vrouwen in Oeganda. Om de adolescentie en de daarmee samenhangende SRH-uitdagingen het hoofd bieden, is de reproductieve autonomie (RA) van adolescente meisjes essentieel. Omdat RA sterk beïnvloed is door beleidskaders en contextuele ondersteuning, maken de huidige trends in SRH van meisjes het noodzakelijk om deze top-down en bottom-up stimulerende processen te versterken. In dit project willen we de capaciteit van Mountains of the Moon University's (MMU) van het departement Verpleegkunde en Vroedkunde en hun partners versterken als aanjagers van verandering op het gebied van SRH bij adolescente meisjes door de contextuele ondersteuning van hun RA. Dit wordt bereikt door: 1) beleidsanalyse en community-based onderzoek naar barrières en facilitators van RA en de context waarin SRH-diensten worden aangeboden aan tienermeisjes, 2) het cultiveren van samenwerking tussen meerdere belanghebbenden om een leernetwerk op te zetten dat de huidige uitdagingen en ondersteuning van RA bij meisjes analyseert en hoe zowel het beleid als de steun van de gemeenschap voor RA bij meisjes kan worden verbeterd, en 3) het verspreiden van de verworven kennis, eerst onder het personeel van MMU's afdeling Verpleegkunde en Vroedkunde, van wie wordt verwacht dat ze de kennis integreren in hun onderwijsactiviteiten, en aan beleidsmakers en praktijkmensen die met deze kennis verder kunnen. De geplande activiteiten zullen uitmonden in leerplaninhoud, conferentiepresentaties, peer-reviewed tijdschriftartikelen, korte infotainment video's en een beleidsnota.

Enhancing the Reproductive Autonomy of Girls in Uganda

A high proportion of adolescent girls in Sub-Saharan Africa face Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) challenges including HIV and AIDS, early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and early childbirth. These contribute to poor health and school dropouts, impacting negatively on the social positioning of women in Uganda. To navigate adolescence and its associated SRH-challenges, adolescent girls’ Reproductive Autonomy (RA) is key. As RA is strongly influenced by policy frameworks and contextual support, current trends in girls’ SRH render it imperative to invigorate these top-down and bottom-up enabling processes. In this project, we aim to strengthen the capacity of Mountains of the Moon University’s (MMU) department of Nursing and Midwifery staff and their partners to be drivers of change in adolescent girls’ SRH through invigorating the contextual scaffolding of their RA. This will be achieved through: 1) policy analysis and community-based research to study barriers and facilitators of RA and the context in which SRH services are offered to adolescent girls, 2) cultivating multi-stakeholder collaboration to establish a learning network that analyses the current challenges and supports to girls’ RA as well as identifies pathways on how both policy and community support for girls’ RA could be improved, and 3) disseminating acquired knowledge, first to staff at MMU’s department of Nursing and Midwifery, who are expected to integrate the knowledge in their teaching activities, and to policy makers and practitioners who can take this knowledge forward. The planned activities will culminate into curriculum content, conference presentations, peer-reviewed journal articles, short infotainment videos, and a policy guidance note.
