Social enterprises aim, through trading goods or services, to address societal or social problems. They are considered hybrid organisations because they face the challenge of having to be both financially viable and try to achieve their social objectives. Because of that hybrid nature, social entrepreneurs are believed to face specific hurdles when starting up a business, such as attracting the necessary financial resources and building legitimacy with potential customers and partners. Both in the literature and in the field, building a social network is considered crucial for successful social entrepreneurship. People also often speak of the social entrepreneur's 'social capital' in this context. Despite the consensus on the importance of social capital for social entrepreneurs, research to date is limited. With this research project, we want to gain insight into the importance and role of social capital among starting social entrepreneurs. In collaboration with mentors of social entrepreneurs and based on qualitative and quantitative research, we study how social capital contributes to the successful start-up and development of a social enterprise. Taking into account the individual characteristics of the social entrepreneur, we investigate what constitutes an optimal mix of social capital. The project proposal has important implications for both the social enterprise literature and the broader management literature. Moreover, we aim to answer questions from practitioners around building social networks for young, start-up social entrepreneurs.
