Sociale Impact van Participatieve Kunstpraktijken

Het publiek debat over de maatschappelijke betekenis van kunst en cultuur is actueel. Veel kunst- en cultuurpraktijken zijn op zoek naar wat ze teweegbrengen bij de deelnemers, het publiek, en ruimer: de samenleving. Welke betekenissen worden eraan ontleend? Welke discussies wakkert het aan? Welke reflecties levert het op? Of ruimer gesteld: Wat zijn de rimpels of de sporen op langere termijn? Heel wat kunst- en cultuurpraktijken zijn op zoek naar verantwoording en trachten uit te drukken hoe en waarom ze doen wat ze doen, en wat de impact is van hun praktijk.
Dit onderzoek richt zich op participatieve kunstpraktijken, als de meest sprekende culturele praktijken in sociaal werk. Deze praktijken worden gezien als hybride praktijken die sociale vraagstukken bevragen, en die in en met de publieke ruimte aan de slag gaan. Het doel van dit onderzoek is elementen van impact van participatieve kunstpraktijken in beeld te brengen die blootleggen ‘hoe het werkt’ en ‘wat het doet’.
Onderzoek naar de impact van participatieve kunstpraktijken gebeurt voornamelijk vanuit economische, rationele en utilitaristische benaderingen. In dit onderzoek wordt impact daarentegen begrepen als een open notie (i.p.v. een intentionele) waarbij individuele en collectieve processen van betekenisverlening blootgelegd worden. Het team richtte zich enerzijds op het zichtbaar maken van de processen die worden opgezet door cultureel werkers met participanten en betrokkenen, en anderzijds op het in kaart brengen van de impact op het sociocultureel weefsel.
In een co-operatief en interpretatief onderzoeksdesign legden de onderzoekers samen met de praktijken deze processen en sociale impact bloot, via multiple casestudies, exemplarische veldanalyse en lerende netwerken. Er werd ook samengewerkt met studenten en lesgevers uit de bachelor- en masteropleidingen sociaal werk. Het team organiseerde een interactief toonmoment in de stadsbibliotheek De Krook en rondde af met een publicatie over “momenten van impact bij participatieve kunstpraktijken”.

Social Impact of Participatory Arts Practices

The public debate about the social significance of art and culture is current. Many arts and cultural practices are in search of what they produce in participants, audiences, and more broadly: society. What meanings are derived from it? What discussions does it spark? What reflections does it produce? Or put more broadly: What are the wrinkles or marks in the longer term? Many arts and cultural practices are seeking accountability and trying to express how and why they do what they do, and the impact of their practice.

This research focuses on participatory arts practices, as the most telling cultural practices in social work. These practices are seen as hybrid practices that interrogate social issues, engaging in and with public space. The purpose of this research is to capture elements of impact of participatory arts practices that reveal "how it works" and "what it does.

Research on the impact of participatory art practices is done primarily from economic, rational and utilitarian approaches. This research, on the other hand, understands impact as an open notion (rather than an intentional one) in which individual and collective processes of meaning-making are exposed. The team focused on one hand on making visible the processes established by cultural workers with participants and stakeholders, and on the other hand on mapping the impact on the sociocultural fabric.

In a collaborative and interpretive research design, the researchers uncovered these processes and social impact together with practices, through multiple case studies, exemplary field analysis and learning networks. They also collaborated with students and teachers from undergraduate and graduate social work programs. The team organized an interactive showcase moment at the city library De Krook and concluded with a publication on "moments of impact in participatory arts practices."
