Een case study van ontwerp van sofa – en/of zitmeubilair voor levenslange termijngebruik

Thema's als de klimaatopwarming, duurzaamheid en de circulaire economie beheersen de actualiteit. Ook in de designwereld hebben niet alleen jonge ontwerpers, maar ook grote huizen steeds meer oog voor het gebruik van alternatieve, meer duurzame materialen en het end of life-aspect van hun producten. Hoewel dat zeker een stap in de goede richting is, zijn de onderzoekers in dit project nog verder gegaan.
In een driejarig praktijkgericht wetenschappelijk onderzoek werd gefocust op de emotionele, irrationele band die gebruikers met een meubel of object hebben, en de manier waarop deze relatie kan worden vormgegeven. Op basis van interviews met promotor Dirk Van Gogh en de andere onderzoekers - kunstenares en modeontwerpster Marina Yee, interieurarchitect Christophe Sonck, performance kunstenaar Helena Dietrich en biochemicus María Boto Ordóñez - bracht Elien Haentjens de bevindingen tekstueel samen in de publicatie 'Relational design. Het vormgeven van een emotionele band als katalysator voor duurzaamheid.'
Meer dan te focussen op het product zelf gaat dit boek dieper in op de emotionele band. Op basis daarvan werden innovatieve parameters afgeleid om meubels te ontwerpen die mensen hun hele leven lang kunnen en willen gebruiken.

A case study of design of sofa - and/or seating furniture for lifetime use

Themes such as global warming, sustainability and the circular economy dominate current events. Even in the design world, not only young designers, but also major houses are increasingly considering the use of alternative, more sustainable materials and the end-of-life aspect of their products. While that is certainly a step in the right direction, the researchers in this project have gone even further.
A three-year hands-on scientific study focused on the emotional, irrational connection users have with a piece of furniture or object, and how this relationship can be shaped. Based on interviews with supervisor Dirk Van Gogh and the other researchers - artist and fashion designer Marina Yee, interior architect Christophe Sonck, performance artist Helena Dietrich and biochemist María Boto Ordóñez - Elien Haentjens textually compiled the findings in the publication 'Relational design. Shaping an emotional bond as a catalyst for sustainability.'
More than focusing on the product itself, this book delves deeper into the emotional bond. Based on that, innovative parameters were derived to design furniture that people can and want to use throughout their lives.
