Sociaal werk vindt altijd plaats op een specifieke locatie en is dus ruimtelijk gesitueerd. Toch krijgen plaats en ruimte doorgaans beperkte aandacht in de theorievorming en opleiding van sociaal werkers. Aan de slag gaan met de (stedelijke) ruimte of plaats in sociaal werk vraagt om een multidisciplinaire aanpak. Enerzijds omwille van de inherente gelaagdheid van het ruimtebegrip als gebouwde, beleefde en sociaal-politieke ruimte. Anderzijds omwille van de uiteenlopende claims en behoeften van verscheidene ruimtegebruikers die op eenzelfde plek samen komen. Vertrekkende vanuit een democratische visie op de ontwikkeling van ruimte heeft ‘plaats’ meer en meer een rol ingenomen in sociaal werk, waarbij men oog heeft voor ruimtelijke elementen, sociale processen en de interactie ertussen. Dit onderzoek heeft als doelstelling (1) het concretiseren van de betekenis en relevantie van sociaal-ruimtelijk werken binnen sociaal werk, zowel in literatuur, praktijk als onderwijs om vervolgens (2) vanuit die inventarisatie kennis te verspreiden rond dit sociaal-ruimtelijk werken. In eerste instantie willen we docenten en studenten sociaal werk en sociale professionals ondersteunen om sociaal-ruimtelijk aan de slag te gaan binnen sociaal werk door hen inspiratie en handvaten te bieden. Het project beoogt sociaal werkers te versterken in hun vermogen om ruimtelijke processen te begrijpen, te beïnvloeden en er professioneel op in te spelen. 

Social work always takes place at a specific location and is therefore spatially situated. Nevertheless, space and place usually receive limited attention in the theory and training of social workers. Getting started with the (urban) space or place in social work requires a multidisciplinary approach. On the one hand, because of the inherent multi-layeredness of the concept of space as built, experienced and socio-political space. On the other hand, because of the diverse claims and needs of different space users who come together in the same place. Starting from a democratic vision of the development of space, 'place' has increasingly taken on a role in social work, in which people have an eye for spatial elements, social processes and the interaction between them. The objective of this research is (1) to define the meaning and relevance of socio-spatial work within social work, both in literature, practice and education, and then (2) to disseminate knowledge about this socio-spatial work from that inventory. In the first instance, we want to support teachers and students of social work and social professionals to work in social work in a socio-spatial way by offering them inspiration and tools. The project aims to strengthen social workers in their ability to understand, influence and respond to spatial processes professionally.
