Valorisatie van een ontwerpmethodiek voor mens en niet-mens

In dit onderzoeksproject ontwikkelen en valideren de onderzoekers een ontwerpmethodiek die de gemeenschap van mens, dier en plant centraal in het ontwerpproces plaatst. Door de aandacht te leggen op het perspectief van de andere actoren verschuiven ze zo de focus van de mens naar de interacties die de mens binnen deze gemeenschap aangaat.

Binnen de Westerse cultuur zijn we het gewoon om het menselijk perspectief en handelingsvermogen centraal te stellen in het begrijpen en vormgeven van onze omgeving en maatschappij. Dit reduceert de ‘anderen’ tot passieve actoren. Hierdoor gaan we vaak voorbij aan de wederkerige en vormende relaties die de mens onderhoudt met de niet-menselijke actoren in zijn omgeving.

Door in het ontwerpproces de mens te decentreren, en dus niet langer centraal te plaatsen, brengen de onderzoekers hier verandering in.

In dit project werken de onderzoekers het decentering design concept uit tot een volwaardige ontwerpmethodiek. Dit doen ze via een iteratief proces van real life testing. Deze methodiek zal in een 2de fase gebruikt worden om workshops te ontwikkelen die zowel ruimtelijke professionals als artistieke en ontwerpmatige disciplines helpen om in hun werking aandacht te hebben voor de totale gemeenschap van mens, dier en plant.

Verder wordt er onderzocht hoe er een educatief programma kan ontwikkeld worden ingebed in de opleidingen van de School of Arts en gericht op zowel interne studenten als externe professionals.

Een publicatie zal de ontwerpmethodiek en achterliggende concepten naar een breder internationaal publiek dissemineren.

Valorization of a design methodology for humans and nonhumans

In this research project, researchers are developing and validating a design methodology that places the community of humans, animals and plants at the center of the design process. By focusing on the perspective of the other actors, they thus shift the focus from humans to the interactions humans engage in within this community.

Within Western culture, we are accustomed to making the human perspective and capacity to act central to understanding and shaping our environment and society. This reduces "others" to passive actors. As a result, we often overlook the reciprocal and formative relationships that humans maintain with the non-human actors in their environment.

By decentralizing humans in the design process, and thus no longer placing them at the center, the researchers are changing this.

In this project, the researchers develop the decentering design concept into a full-fledged design methodology. They are doing this through an iterative process of real life testing. In a 2nd phase, this methodology will be used to develop workshops that help spatial professionals as well as artistic and design disciplines to consider the total community of humans, animals and plants in their operations.

Furthermore, it will be explored how to develop an educational program embedded in the School of Arts courses and aimed at both internal students and external professionals.

A publication will disseminate the design methodology and underlying concepts to a wider international audience.
