Wegen naar het hoger onderwijs voor aspirant-pioniersstudenten

Dit onderzoek analyseert de sociale determinanten van aspirant-pionierstudenten (jongeren die overwegen om verder te studeren en van wie beide ouders niet verder gestudeerd hebben). We brengen in kaart welke drempels en krachten deze jongeren in hun thuiscontext ervaren op weg naar hoger onderwijs. We gaan ook na welke ondersteunende rol andere sociale netwerken kunnen bieden. Om dit te bereiken:
- interviewen we 15 à 20 aspirant pioniersstudenten uit de tweede graad middelbaar onderwijs.
-interviewen we 10 à 15 jongeren die we in het eerdere project SMO-G interviewden
-doen we een kwantitatieve bevraging bij startende HOGENT-studenten.
De analyse van deze verschillende data zal inzichten opleveren ter ondersteuning van deze groep jongeren op verschillende domeinen. Op deze manier willen we bijdragen tot een vlotter traject naar het hoger onderwijs voor deze jongeren.

Pathways to higher education for aspiring first-generation students

In this project we will analyze the social determinants of aspiring first-generation students (adolescents who are considering pursuing tertiary education and whose parents themselves didn’t attend tertiary education). These people often face particular challenges due to the absence of familial experience with tertiary education. Understanding their specific circumstances and needs is important for providing adequate support. This research will identify both barriers and strengths experienced by these individuals within their domestic environment on their journey to higher education. We will also explore the supportive role potentially played by other social networks.
To achieve this goal we will:
-conduct interviews with 15-20 aspiring first generation students from second grade in secondary education (14-16 years old).
-conduct interviews with 15-20 individuals who were previously interviewed in the SMO-G project while they were in the final years of secondary education. By now they might have transitioned to tertiary education or have dropped out.
-conduct a quantitative survey of incoming HOGENT students.
The analysis of data from these various sources will provide insights to support these youth through different social contexts. In doing so, we want to contribute to a smooth transition of these individuals from secondary to tertiary education.
