The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study is to gain insight into the social perceptions of adolescents (between the ages of 16 and 18) around the themes of inclusive citizenship and recovery among persons with severe psychiatric problems. Despite hopeful theorizing around inclusive citizenship and recovery, persons with severe psychiatric problems still often face social exclusion and stigmatization. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study is to gain insight into societal perceptions surrounding these issues. More specifically, we want to map the perceptions of young people (between the ages of 16 and 18) around inclusive citizenship and recovery among persons with severe psychiatric problems. Data collection will be done using the story completion method. In this method, participants will be asked to write a story based on a hypothetical story beginning (story voice) prepared by the researchers. Participants (estimated n=150) will be recruited in Norwegian and Flemish secondary schools. More specifically, eight class groups will be recruited (n=4 in Norway; n=4 in Flanders) from different educational types (e.g. ASO, TSO and BSO). Data will be analyzed in steps (i.e. first analysis by country, then overarching analysis) using thematic analysis.
