Efficiënt duaal leren in het hoger onderwijs

Met dit onderzoeksproject willen we een bijdrage leveren aan het (tot nu beperkte) wetenschappelijk pedagogisch onderzoek naar duale trajecten. We willen nagaan of duaal leren een efficiënte en duurzame leervorm is, voor welke studenten/opleidingen/sectoren dit het geval is en wat de randvoorwaarden zijn voor optimaal duaal hoger onderwijs, zowel voor studenten, lesgevers als werkveld. Met deze kennis kunnen alle hoger onderwijsinstellingen onderbouwd middelen inzetten en/of opleidingsprogramma's ontwikkelen die beantwoorden aan de noden van toekomstige studenten, alsook aan de noden van het werkveld.
De laatste decennia is er een duidelijke internationale tendens om ook binnen het hoger onderwijs leren op de werkplek te stimuleren en faciliteren en dit trekt zich door naar de Vlaamse context.
Er bestaat vrij veel wetenschappelijke evidentie voor de efficiëntie van leren op de werkplek (in tegenstelling tot het formele leren binnen opleidingsprogramma’s) (Gear et al (1994), Eraut & Hirsch (2007), Felstead et al (2005)). Wetenschappelijke evidentie voor de efficiëntie van duaal leren als specifieke vorm van werkplekleren binnen het hoger onderwijs is veel moeilijker te vinden (Costley & Dikerdem, 2011).
Binnen HOGENT werd een pilootproject gestart waarin kwantitatief en kwalitatief onderzoek gevoerd werd naar de efficiëntie van duale leertrajecten en naar de kritische succesfactoren voor goede duale trajecten, zowel voor studenten, lesgevers als werkveld. Dit pilootproject gaf aanleiding tot een aanvraag bij het Europees Sociaal Fonds, waar dit onderzoek momenteel gecontinueerd en uitgebreid wordt in het project 'Effectief én efficiënt duaal leren in het hoger onderwijs'.

Efficient dual learning in higher education

With this research project we want to contribute to the (so far limited) scientific pedagogical research on dual pathways. We want to investigate whether dual learning is an efficient and sustainable form of learning, for which students/programs/sectors this is the case and what the preconditions are for optimal dual higher education, both for students, teachers and the professional field. With this knowledge, all higher education institutions can use well-founded resources and/or develop training programs that meet the needs of future students, as well as the needs of the professional field.
In recent decades, there has been a clear international trend to stimulate and facilitate workplace learning within higher education as well, and this is being extended to the Flemish context.
There is quite a lot of scientific evidence for the efficiency of workplace learning (as opposed to formal learning within training programs) (Gear et al (1994), Eraut & Hirsch (2007), Felstead et al (2005)). Scientific evidence for the efficacy of dual learning as a specific form of workplace learning within higher education is much harder to find (Costley & Dikerdem, 2011).
Within HOGENT, a pilot project was started in which quantitative and qualitative research was conducted into the efficiency of dual learning paths and into the critical success factors for good dual paths, both for students, teachers and the professional field. This pilot project led to an application to the European Social Fund, where this research is currently being continued and expanded in the project 'Effective and efficient dual learning in higher education'.
