Studies show that elementary school children do not meet the prescribed international standard for physical activity, despite the laundry list of benefits that would come with it. Making children more active is thus a major challenge for the future. The school, with Physical Education (LO) classes in particular, can play a central role in this. In the Netherlands, attempts are already being made to capitalize on this by setting up bubble courses, i.e. soft obstacle courses, during LO lessons. This concept is in line with the latest theories on motor learning i.e. error-free learning, learning with external focus and differential learning. The purpose of this research is to encourage children to move in order to reach the minimum standard. The important stakeholders here are the LO teachers. By making a translation to Flanders and measuring the effects of self-discovery learning from the vision of the self-determination theory, these goals will be pursued. This will be done by means of a series of lessons in which the gym will be divided into three zones, in which each lesson three different curricula will be offered with attention to movement at different levels, including the bobble track. Hereby children always get the chance to move effectively and in their own way and moreover the active movement time increases considerably. Through pre-, interim and post measurements at control and intervention schools, the effect of this series of lessons on motor learning outcomes and movement motivation will be examined among 5-12 year olds. The long-term goal is a general implementation of this vision in all LO lessons in primary education in Flanders within the three educational networks. A ready-made lesson series will be provided as well as in-service training on demand.
