Duurzaamheid van tijdelijke invullingen

Opportunitijdelijkheid is een onderzoek naar de sociale rechtvaardigheid in/van tijdelijke invullingen.

Het onderzoek verkent hoe tijdelijke invullingen en gebruiken van leegstaande gebouwen en terreinen opportuniteiten bieden voor (sociaal) rechtvaardige en duurzame verstedelijking. Tijdelijkheid wordt daarbij geïnterpreteerd als een in tijd beperkte staat-van-zijn tussen twee andere situaties: een (voorgaande) oorspronkelijke en een geplande, toekomstige staat. Invulling wordt daarbij begrepen als een programma dat in deze tijdelijkheid bewust georganiseerd wordt op deze plek.
Door middel van literatuurstudie, interviews en case-studies, onderzoeken we op welke manieren de context van tijdelijkheid mogelijkheden biedt voor experiment en onderzoek naar gewenste toekomstbeelden. Hoe houden tijdelijke invullingen rekening met bestaande sociale realiteiten en problematieken van de plaats zelf, en hoe gaan ze daarmee aan de slag? Het onderzoek werkt dus steeds plaatsgebonden, zowel fysiekruimtelijk als sociaal. Er worden daarnaast steeds diverse actoren op en rond de site betrokken: van het beleid en initiators tot gebruikers en omwonenden. Hoe gaan zij om met die bestaande fysiekruimtelijke en sociale realiteiten en welke rollen zijn weggelegd voor ieder van hen.
Het centrale thema – opportuniteiten van tijdelijke invullingen - daagt dan ook uit om in beeld te brengen en te analyseren hoe opportuniteiten effectief vertaald kunnen worden naar realiteiten. Daarbij zoeken we antwoord op diverse uitdagende vragen. Welke fysiekruimtelijke, sociale en beleidsmatige contexten zijn van belang? Waar liggen potentiële moeilijkheden en valkuilen? Welke rollen kunnen er weggelegd worden voor diverse betrokken professionals, overheden en burgers? En op welke manieren kunnen processen van tijdelijke invulling best (beleidsmatig) ondersteund worden?

Sustainability of temporary infill projects

This project is an investigation into social justice in/of temporary infill. How can temporary infills contribute to socially just urban development and sustainable urbanisation?

The research explores how temporary infills and uses of vacant buildings and sites offer opportunities for (socially) just and sustainable urbanisation. Here, temporariness is interpreted as a time-limited state of being between two other situations: a (previous) original and a planned, future state. Filling-in is thereby understood as a programme given to this place in this temporality.

Through literature reviews, interviews and active and retrospective case studies, the team investigates the ways in which the context of temporariness offers opportunities for experimentation and research into desired futures. How do temporary infills take into account and engage with existing social realities and issues of the place itself? So the research always works site-specific, both physically-spatially and socially; and together with the various actors on and around the site, from policy and initiators to users and local residents. How do they deal with these existing physical-spatial and social realities and what roles are assigned to each of them.
The central theme - opportunities of temporary infill - therefore challenges us to visualise and analyse how opportunities can be effectively translated into realities, which physical-spatial, social and policy contexts are important, where possible difficulties and pitfalls lie, which roles can be set aside for various professionals, authorities and citizens, and how processes of temporary infill can be supported.
