Sociale duurzaamheid in de Landschaps- en Tuinarchitectuur: naar een dialoog in onderwijs en praktijk

Landschaps- en tuinarchitectuur heeft met zijn proces en praktijk een belangrijke ambitie op het vlak van duurzaamheid. We stellen echter vast dat vooral fysieke en ecologische aspecten van duurzaamheid aan bod komen, maar veel minder sociale duurzaamheid, met aspecten zoals rechtvaardigheid, sociale gelijkheid, aandacht voor mensenrechten, participatie en in- of exclusiemechanismen, toegankelijkheid, rechtvaardigheid en armoede. Dit geldt zowel binnen het onderwijs als binnen de praktijk.
Dit onderzoeksproject wenst het debat te activeren over het integreren van sociale duurzaamheid in de praktijk en de opleiding van de landschaps- en tuinarchitectuur. Met interviews en observaties van de praktijk sinds de jaren ’70 reconstrueren we hoe en welke sociale duurzaamheidsprincipes binnen de landschaps- en tuinarchitectuur aandacht krijgen en hoe maatschappelijke veranderingen hier impact op hebben. Daarnaast reflecteren, sensibiliseren en activeren we in nauwe samenwerking met de beroepsverenigingen en de opleidingen landschaps- en tuinarchitectuur van Hogeschool Gent en Erasmushogeschool Brussel over sociale duurzaamheid door middel van workshops, discussietafels, ontwerpoefeningen en lessen. Doorheen dit gedeeld leerproces streven we naar een praktisch bruikbaar referentiekader rond sociale duurzaamheid. Sensibilisering hieromtrent zal gebeuren in praktijk en opleiding door middel van een manifest, lesbijdragen, een startnota voor de opleiding, vlogs, een film en een studiedag. Gezien de directe impact van landschaps- en tuinarchitectuur als ontwerpende discipline van de fysieke en sociale ruimte, heeft het op de voorgrond plaatsen van sociale aspecten als rechtvaardigheid, toegankelijkheid, inclusie etc. rechtstreekse gevolgen voor de duurzaamheid van de Vlaamse ruimte zelf.

Social sustainability in Landscape and Garden Architecture: toward a dialogue in education and practice

Landscape and garden architecture, with its process and practice, has an important ambition in terms of sustainability. However, we find that mostly physical and ecological aspects of sustainability are addressed, but much less social sustainability, with aspects such as equity, social equality, attention to human rights, participation and inclusion or exclusion mechanisms, accessibility, justice and poverty. This is true both within education and practice.
This research project wishes to activate the debate on integrating social sustainability into the practice and training of landscape and garden architecture. With interviews and observations of practice since the 1970s, we reconstruct how and which social sustainability principles receive attention within landscape and garden architecture and how social changes impact this. Furthermore, in close collaboration with professional associations and the landscape and garden architecture courses of Hogeschool Gent and Erasmushogeschool Brussel, we reflect, sensitize and activate on social sustainability through workshops, discussion tables, design exercises and lessons. Throughout this shared learning process, we aim to develop a practically usable frame of reference around social sustainability. Raising awareness about this will be done in practice and training through a manifesto, teaching contributions, a starting note for training, vlogs, a film and a study day. Given the direct impact of landscape and garden architecture as a design discipline of physical and social space, bringing social aspects such as equity, accessibility, inclusion, etc. to the forefront has direct implications for the sustainability of Flemish space itself.
